1. Initial Information, Advice, and Guidance (IAG)

Prior to enrolment, every learner receives impartial IAG to ensure the programme meets their needs. This involves:

Aims and Objectives: Discussing the learner’s personal, social, and professional goals (e.g., employment, citizenship, or further study).

Course Requirements: Explaining the qualification structure, duration, attendance expectations, and assessment methods (exams vs. portfolios).

Signposting: If the centre cannot meet the learner’s specific needs, they are referred to an appropriate alternative provider.

2. Initial and Diagnostic Assessment

To ensure the learner is placed at the correct level, a formal assessment takes place:

Level Placement: Assessing current skills in Reading, Writing, and Speaking & Listening against the ESOL Core Curriculum.

Diagnostic Testing: Identifying specific strengths and areas for development to inform the teacher’s lesson planning.

Prior Achievement: Reviewing any previous qualifications or certificates the learner may already hold.

3. Individual Learning Plan (ILP) Development

Following assessment, the learner and tutor collaborate to create an ILP:

Short and Long-term Goals: Setting SMART targets based on the learner’s IAG interview.

Support Needs: Identifying any barriers to learning or requirements for “Reasonable Adjustments” (e.g., dyslexia support or accessibility needs).

4. Formal Programme Induction

Before the start of the qualification, a structured induction is delivered to familiarise the learner with the centre:

Code of Conduct: Expectations regarding attendance, punctuality, and mutual respect.

Health, Safety, and Safeguarding: Fire safety procedures, first aid, and how to report a concern or “Prevent” related issues.

Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion: Ensuring the learner understands their right to a learning environment free from discrimination.

Centre Policies: Introduction to the Appeals Procedure, Malpractice Policy, and Student Feedback systems.

5. Digital and Physical Resources

Facilities: A tour of the classroom, library, and student common areas.

VLE Access: Providing login details for digital platforms (e.g., Teams, Moodle, or Google Classroom) and explaining how to access learning materials remotely.

6. Final Enrolment and Commitment

The process concludes with the signing of a Learner Agreement, confirming that the learner:

Has received appropriate IAG and is on the correct level of study.

Understands the requirements for achieving the qualification.

Consents to the centre’s data protection and privacy policies.
